In four states, in three days, four Republicans on this site said no to a debate or forum their opponent was ready to do. A Michigan Senate debate went on with an empty podium, South Dakota's public broadcaster aired its Senate debate without the senator, and a second Wisconsin governor's debate was canceled.
Michigan repealed right-to-work in 2023. John James called bringing it back 'a massive win for freedom' — and in Congress he signed a bill to impose it on all 50 states and voted against restoring union rights for federal workers.
On September 16 the House passed the PROOF Act, 217-207. It orders states to turn over whatever Medicaid, SNAP and other benefit records Attorney General Todd Blanche asks for in writing, with no judge involved. A federal court had already blocked the Trump administration from cutting food stamp funding to states that refused to hand over recipient data. 185 of the members who voted yes have report cards on this site.
Michigan's Republican nominee for governor told Benny Johnson the FBI 'will have a presence' in West and Southeast Michigan leading up to Election Day. Asked about it at a Senate hearing, the FBI director said 'you bet' agents will be there, refused to promise not to interfere in November, and wouldn't say whether Trump lost in 2020.
Robert Aderholt, Speaker Mike Johnson and 11 other tracked Republicans requested a GAO review of abortion coverage in Obamacare plans. Aderholt and Chris Smith then used it to demand 'full Hyde protections for all ACA plans.' GAO's own summary says federal law already bars tax credits from paying for abortion, that insurers must price that coverage at no less than $1 a month, and that almost every plan that covers it is in a state whose law requires coverage.
On September 15 the House voted 220-204 to end the war with Iran — the third time since June. Republicans voted 203 to 7 against it, and 180 of the members who voted no are on our report cards. The same day, the Congressional Budget Office put the war's direct cost at $38.1 billion and said it will push inflation higher into 2027.
Michigan's Republican Senate nominee argued that people named in the Epstein files need protecting if there's no evidence of a crime. FEC records show seven of them have given more than $4.6 million to his campaign, his committees and the super PAC backing him — $4.5 million of it from Blackstone's Stephen Schwarzman.
