In early 2026, the Trump administration moved to open a large ICE detention warehouse in Merrimack to speed up deportations. Kelly Ayotte was slow to protect the town — and her account of what she knew didn't hold up.
Ayotte said she received no report on the proposed Merrimack facility until mid-February 2026. But acting ICE Director Todd Lyons testified to a U.S. Senate committee that his office had given Ayotte's office a report on the project weeks earlier.
Only after weeks of local protests did Ayotte announce in February 2026 that DHS would not move forward with the facility — thanking Secretary Kristi Noem and praising New Hampshire's "cooperation" with ICE, rather than ruling out a detention center anywhere in the state.

Flip-Flopping on Abortion After a Career of Attacking It
For nearly two decades — as New Hampshire Attorney General and as a U.S. Senator — Kelly Ayotte built one of the most anti-abortion records in the state. Then, the day she launched her run for governor, she suddenly said she wouldn't touch New Hampshire's abortion law. Granite Staters have to decide whether to trust a change of heart that arrived exactly when she needed one.
Ayotte's promise not to restrict abortion dates only to her 2023 campaign launch. Asked about it on WMUR, she said, "I've been very clear from the day I announced my candidacy that I would not change that law" — a reversal that came after two decades of opposing abortion rights.
As Governor she has so far kept that promise, telling lawmakers in her 2025 inaugural address she would veto "legislation that further restricts access to abortion beyond our current law." But that pledge only protects New Hampshire's existing 24-week ban — which has no exception for rape or incest — not the far broader restrictions she spent her career pushing.
As a senator, Ayotte co-sponsored and voted for the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act — federal legislation to ban abortion after 20 weeks, earlier than New Hampshire's current law.
As New Hampshire Attorney General, Ayotte defended a parental notification abortion law at the U.S. Supreme Court that did not include an explicit exception for the health of the mother.
Kelly Ayotte spent her career attacking reproductive freedom and disowned that record the moment it became inconvenient. Granite Staters deserve a governor they can trust. We deserve better.
